Cross-border enforcement of traffic laws: Commission unveils database plans.
The European Commission has adopted a new proposal for a directive on the cross border enforcement of traffic laws.
The proposed directive is an important step to tackle non-resident drivers who usually evade prosecution because of the difficulty of identifying them, or of being able to check the address to which the vehicle is registered.
A European network for the electronic exchange of data is planned, making it possible to send notices of offences to other countries. The proposed directive will cover four types of road traffic offence: speeding, drink-driving, not wearing a seat belt and failing to stop at a red light.
